Social Walking

Welcome to the Social Walking group page

This page provides information on how to setup your own walking group, plus an example of the experiences and benefits from another local walking group which you may find of help.

How do I start?  You could ask a friend or neighbour to join you or start your own informal walking group. For a gentler walk make enquiries with the following e.g. The Farming Life Centre Walking Programme or contact your Social Prescribing Service.

An example of a social walking group – bringing positive benefits to health and well being:

Who are we?

We are a friendly group of people consisting of friends, neighbours and residents from local and surrounding areas who like to walk. It is very informal and you take care and responsibility for yourself. We meet one morning a week and discuss, plan and reach a consensus regarding the route. Thus, taking into consideration the changeable weather and how people are feeling in themselves.

How did it all start?

We were two people new to Hartington village who liked to walk and chat. We met other people in the local Community who mentioned they would like to join us. After one year, we have 20 people.

What type of walk is it?

The walking routes vary and so far, have included terrain which can be uneven, with hills and inclines. Distance can be variable. The furthest distance achieved so far is 6 miles. This is usually followed by a coffee and a chat. Having links to WhatsApp helps communicate arrangements and any cancellation but not essential. The number of people walking weekly can fluctuate depending on individual commitments but, have been popular through the Summer months.

How do I start? What if this type of walk seems too challenging for me?

You could ask a friend or neighbour to join you or start your own informal walking group. For a gentler walk make enquiries with the following e.g. The Farming Life Centre Walking Programme or contact your Social Prescribing Service.
