Library Service
We provide a free home delivery service to Derbyshire residents who need it either on a permanent or temporary basis.
The service is for anyone who finds it difficult to visit a library or mobile library, or carry their books home.
This could be due to:
- disability
- limited mobility
- illness
- caring responsibilities
When you apply for the service, we’ll phone you to find out a bit about you, and to tell you more about how the service works. We’ll also ask you about what what kind of things you’d like us to deliver. We’ll then arrange a visit to follow this up in more detail.
One of our home library assistants will then arrange to visit you once every 4 weeks.
We deliver to people in their own home as well as those in care homes.
We also offer a Friends & Family service for those who have a family member, carer or friend able to visit the library on their behalf.
If you’d like to become one of our home library service customers, or know someone who does, please get in touch:

Social Isolation
Careline
Careline Tel 01335 210353
Careline is a registered charity (No. 1068801) which offers a free telephone befriending service to people living in the Derbyshire Dales and East Staffordshire.
We aim to make people’s lives better by calling those who feel in need of support – they may be elderly, less able to get out, recently bereaved, feeling lonely or isolated. We offer friendship to the people we call and peace of mind to their family and friends.
Our team of over 50 volunteers make the befriending calls, providing greater social interaction for our members and helping to give them the confidence to remain living independently. We monitor people’s well-being and pass on useful information about the services available to them in their local community.
Our service is completely free and available every day of the year including weekends and bank holidays.
It’s good to chat. Let our free telephone befriending service brighten your day.

Connex Readycall is funded by the National Lottery and St James’s Place. The service is delivered through the involvement of volunteers who are managed and supported by staff in our Ashbourne offices, operating under the charity, Connex Community Support.
The scheme is open to adults over 65 living in the Derbyshire Dales. Support can be short or long term, depending on the client’s needs.
How we help
Befriending – Clients are matched to a regular volunteer to visit them in their own home.
-
- Befriending going out – Volunteers accompany someone on a local outing such as a visit to a café or garden centre.
- Readycall Essential Shopping Service– Volunteers will collect and deliver shopping such as food or personal care items but are not permitted to purchase alcohol or tobacco products. Volunteers will carry out up to two shops per month from one shop/supermarket subject to volunteer availability.
- Assisted Shopping – Volunteers will accompany people on their regular shop, supporting them with transport and help with carrying bags.
- Practical Help – agreed bespoke one-off practical tasks.
- Accompanied Group Activities – Volunteers will accompany clients to group activities to either enjoy together or until they feel they are able to attend independently.
- Group Activities – Attending one of our group activities – Coffee Mornings/Cancer Support etc
- People living with cancer – tailored support based on the service user’s diagnosis and treatment plan
What we can’t do – We are not a respite service and cannot be a replacement for paid care services. Connex Readycall is therefore unfortunately unable to provide support for:
-
- Personal care, medication prompts or cleaning.
- Clients in a crisis or an emergency situation.
- Clients with acute mental health problems, or advanced dementia.
- Clients with substance or alcohol misuse, or a recent history of aggressive behaviour.
How to make a referral: details on the website https://connex.org.uk/befriending/
Rural Befriending
Our free befriending service aims to reduce the feelings of loneliness and isolation which can result from the challenges of farming and living in rural areas. Our aim is to make a positive difference to people’s lives.
What we do
If you, or someone you know, is in need of a little extra help, we offer friendship and support. We’ll introduce you to a volunteer with similar interests, then arrange for them to visit you regularly on a one-to-one basis. You might just enjoy a chat and a cup of tea, or perhaps go to a local event or go on a short trip together, building a lasting friendship. Their local knowledge will help to keep you engaged with the community around you.
To talk with us about the service, or volunteering, please call/text on 07777 168 857 or email donna@thefarminglifecentre.org.uk
Social prescribing
Social Prescribing is a way of supporting and improving people’s health and wellbeing outside of traditional medical settings. In the Derbyshire Dales, GPs, nurses and other primary health professionals can refer someone to New Connections, who will start by having a conversation with the person about what matters to them. From there, the person will be introduced to activities,
groups or services that enable them to get the most out of life. Examples of this could be gardening clubs, art groups, volunteering opportunities, healthy cooking classes or befriending services. Whatever the person is linked to, it will always be based on their wishes and interests.
